March 4-6, 2008 was the most successful International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition to date. With over 700 in attendance, representing over 40 countries the congress was reestablished as the premiere scientific conference on plant based diets. Scientists from a dozen different countries shared the podium to impart their evidence for the efficacy of vegetarian nutrition.

Held on the campus of Loma Linda University, the Drayson Center Opsahl Gymnasium provided generous room for the increased attendance.  Keynote addresses were given by David Heber on the nutrigenomics era and by Gary Fraser forecasting where vegetarian diets will lead for health outcomes.  The three days were packed with a variety of symposia, panel discussions and debates.  Chronic disease treatment, current issues on soy, epidemiological findings on health and nutritional outcomes, longevity and aging issues, and the impact of food production and consumption on climate change were among those topics considered.  Please follow the link to the Congress program for a complete listing and to access specific abstracts from each lecture.

A vegetarian congress is not complete without a vegetarian feast and the 5th Congress was no exception. In addition to a variety of interesting snacks at the lecture breaks and at the exhibit booths, the evening reception and the banquet were gourmet fare. Each evening included entertainment and honors to those who have helped established the scientific credibility of plant based nutrition.

Proceedings from the 5th International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition have once again be published in the American Journal on Clinical Nutrition. Electronic copies of the manuscripts from the proceedings can be viewed at the journal website (click here). And DVDs of most the lectures from the Congress are available to purchase. Follow the link from the home page to order the disks or to request free access to the lecture slides. In addition to the slides, DVDs and proceedings, an updated version of the Vegetarian Pyramid, first presented at the 3rd International Congress is available through the resource link.
